Candles are pretty to the eyes, aromatic to the nose, but candles and ears? What do they have in common? Read further, you'll find out. I like sharing our story with people because whenever we look back on it, it still amazes us.
Ear Candling - a natural remedy
It's been eleven years since this natural remedy made a difference in the health of our 5-yr-old son. Knowing about it not only saved us money, but even more important, our child was spared from unneccesary ear surgery and the pain and discomfort that goes along with it.I'll start with the subject, our son Ben. He was five years old when we first learned about ear candling, also called ear coning. Ever since he was a little baby, he was troubled with congestion, colds and earaches quite often. My husband or myself would take him to our doctor regularly who would prescribe the usual medicine for a cold and give us antibiotics for the ear infections that would result from congestion. Ben would get better for awhile, but it would always come back, sooner rather than later, usually every 3 or 4 months. Yes, that often. Believe me, I remember! It was very frustrating and worrisome for my husband and I; we didn't like seeing our son suffer and didn't know what else to do except give him the medicine the doctor prescribed which helped only temporarily. This went on until we were introduced to a natural homeopathic specialist very knowledgeable in natural remedies who told us about ear candling. Along with the positive: an inexpensive, natural remedy that's effective and easy to do, there was the negative: it is quite different and not a medically-approved procedure. My husband and I are pretty much naturalists anyway; we actually had Ben and his older brother at home with a mid-wife. Our other option was definitely not working; and after giving it much thought, we decided to give it a try, confident it would be a safe procedure as long as we carefully followed the instructions that came with the candles which we purchased at a health food/vitamin store.
The Results
The first thing that amazed us after we finished the procedure was to see the ear wax that was slowly pulled out of his ear and inside the candle. It seemed like a lot for one little ear. Then the next day, we noticed his ear started draining, the one that always gave him the trouble. It drained for two days with a pus-type matter. We became concerned and were going to take him back to our family doctor when thankfully, the drainage stopped, and that was that. Ben was perfectly fine. After that, there was no more pain, no more infections, no more earaches again. Ever! That is the honest truth. I don't remember Ben ever having an earache since, and he is now 16 years old! And that's how and why we became believers of ear candling.
Pros and Cons
My husband and I realized as we looked back on it later that the drainage resulting from candling the ear was exactly what his ear needed:
- The removal of the excess ear wax cleared the path for all of the infection that had been building up in his ear to be released. The wax had been blocking it for a long time. (All the years of treating him with medicine alone were just quick fixes but did not correct the problem).
I'm sure we've all heard or read stories of babies and little toddlers who need to have ear surgeries for symptoms similar to those of our son's. And maybe a lot of them were absolutely necessary for that child or because the parents didn't know about ear candling and had no other choice.
- Parents might be leary of it and not want to try it because it is a different approach. If our doctor had ever suggested surgery for Ben, I don't believe we would have taken that route because we believe in doing things the natural way whenever possible. (Only if it was the last resort alternative in saving his hearing would we have consented to a surgery).
Become Informed
As with anything, there is controversy about this subject. Although this is a very simple procedure, become well informed before trying it. To save time and space in explaining how it is done here, go to www.earconing.com to read the basics. Most natural health food stores also carry information about it. Plus there are many websites on this topic where you can become informed about it. Do a search on Google. Read the pros and cons. I'm just sharing our story for others to read because it worked for us. And that was definitely not the first and last time we used it. All of us have tried it at least once since our ears had never been cleaned before and we were naturally curious to see how it felt. It produces a nice, warm sensation in your ear and actually feels good. And it has also come in handy at times for relieving sore throat and glandular neck ache symptoms that accompany colds. It has proven effective to our family over and over again.
Thank you for reading and may God guide you in all your health decisions.

Thanks for sharing!
Modern medicine is great but there are many old remedies that work well.
Unfortunately, most of today's society looks for that magic pill that will cure whatever ails them in a matter of minutes.
I too am a naturalist and will search my natural remedy bag before resorting to a prescription drug which usually masks the real issue.
I haven't tried candeling but may in the future.
